Marinus Jongman

Hallo allemaal,

Hello everyone, my name is Marinus, I am 21 years old and I study International Relations.

I was born and raised in Groningen, so a true stadjer, but as a kid, I lived in Cambridge (England) for a year. That’s all the standard information, sorry to bother you with that. Next to my studies, I am in the Faculty Council of the Arts Faculty at the RuG to have my say in what happens within my faculty and think along with the plans of the board to try and create the best faculty for students. On a larger scale, I try to do the same, I am the treasurer at the Groninger Studentenbond (also known as the Groninger Student Union). I am mostly working on lobbying for student interests in the municipality, so, for instance, the student union does a lot for student housing. Most of that contact happens through the city council and other meetings, but the scope of the subjects is much wider. So for instance in October the municipality decided on new rules for parking your bike in the party district of the Poele and Peperstraat and we tried our best to make sure they were fair towards students.

I chose to study in Groningen because I am from Groningen, my friends still live here and the program that I wanted to do is only offered in Groningen. All the boxes were checked so it was a very easy decision to make for me. I think it was a good choice as I am very happy here. Of course, there are some improvements to be made in the university and at the Hanze, mostly being communication towards students. So much is happening at our universities and yet students only hear 1% of it. They are often very unaware of what is happening in their institution and their city because of a lack of communication, which is a shame.

Even with its points of improvement, we must all not forget that we study at some of the best universities in the world with a very high quality of education, but good doesn’t mean it can’t be better. That is what I strive for, to create the best learning environment for students to develop themselves.
